Market Fresh and Mosques

Sept 18 2012

We visited a local fruit/spice market that was close to us.  And revisited a friend that the group had bought hazelnuts from earlier in the week.  I could not get my head around all the fresh produce.  These melons in the front of this picture are a mix between honeydew, and cataloupe, green in color.

Spices galore.
Rice, bulgar, pilaf..........

This guy was constantly reorganizing his arrangement of vegetables and fruit.
Check out how big these cabbages were.  Twice the size of our head and about 75 cents a head.
All types of nuts.
Hazelnuts
Turkish delight, and they had baklava fresh too.
These were the pipes people smoked from.  This is a huge past time here.  They have them set up at outdoor restaurants and have places of business just for tobacco smoking.
Here's where they attach too.  All the smoking population was my least favorite part of Turkey.  I heard that recently they outlawed smoking inside buildings, but our hotels consistently smelled of smoke, because I guess there is no one to regulate inside your room.
The wide view of the market. I love the ceiling.
The spice shop worker.
The grapes were by far the best produce there.  Better than in the states.

Before we visited the fruit market, a local friend took us on a tour of a Mosque.
I was just amazed how intricate and detailed all the place was.  Not one place was not decorated.  I just loved the colors, Blue and yellow.
Huge chandeliers hung everywhere.

Upstairs where the women gather.

Where the Imam stands.

Where men wash before prayer.
Just a pretty window.

Seeing the City

Sept 17 2012

Today we walked around and got our bearing for the city.   Talked to some local shop owners,  got a feel for the culture, and got invited in for some Cay at a local exchange place.

The main street we walked with lots of shops on it.
The city statue of Ataturk.
You can really find most anything you need......
Eggs, cheese, olives...........this shop certainly smelled like cheese when we passed by
But it was nothing compare to the fresh fish smell of this shop...........
I guess this is what you get when your right on the Black Sea.

This our TRANSIT van that could quite make it up this mtn, with all of us and our luggage in tow.

Here is Steven our mechanic by trade group member helping us back down safely.
You notice I am out of the car.  Taking the picture of course. By out by choice.
Also taking in this view.
The first tea field we saw up close.
Some kind of beans
On our way to eat lunch with a view. But this is certainly a nice one.

And here is the city from the top, or close to it.

Some zoomed in shots of the city below.

Taking it all in.

From our table

Here is our bunch, stuffed from lunch and Cay.
It was here I really fell in love with Muhlama (a cornmeal, cheese, butter appetizer), you dip bread in it and well there are a lot of calories that you just can not think about while eating.
Driving down.

Local Futbol Stadium
The highway, from our hotel window, one direction.

The other direction, a park across the street.
Me and my honey, Drew
Our favorite "Turkish" Friends
The park from the other side, complete with a walking track, and a few places to eat waterside.
Dusk.
